I’ve been living and working in Laos for more than 4 years now. Laos, especially its old capital Luang Prabang, is a popular destination among travelers from developed countries. It is also called back packers heaven/haven. But did you know that Laos is almost unheard of in the Philippines?
I remember a conversation with my parents when I told them I will be working out of the country.
Me: Mom, Dad I will be starting a job in Laos.
Parents: Laos? Where is it, Cambodia?
Me: It is in Laos.
Parents: Ah, you mean Thailand!
Me: Laos is a different country, beside Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar and Cambodia!
Parents: Ok so what are you going to do in Cambodia?
Me: AAARGH!!!!
So to introduce this beautiful country to my fellow Pinoys and to others who are also unfamiliar with Laos, here are my TOP 10 REASONS TO VISIT LAOS NOW!
1. Relaxed Vibe – If you’re from a big city or a rich country, you may be too familiar with busy streets, automated everything and everyone moving fast. Sometimes, these perks of big cities can be overwhelming and tiring. Laos has a chill calm vibe. From the moment you arrive at Wattay International Airport, you’ll immediately feel it. You can see that the airport is not crowded. No traffic jam even on rush hours (compared with other Asian capitals like Bangkok, Manila or Kuala Lumpur). Very few drivers use their horn, almost every one is calm.

2. Beautiful Tourist Spots and Temples –tourist spots in both Luang Prabang and Vientiane like Patuxay, That Luang, Buddha park, Mt. Phousi are accessible by bicycle or short motorbike ride.
3. Laos Culture and Laotians – Majority of Laotians are friendly and kind. You can feel that you are safe here than in some other Asian Cities.
4. Budget Friendly – Laos, like other South East Asian developing countries is budget friendly. It is famous for backpackers for a reason. Since you are not coming here for expensive theme parks or luxury tours, you only need a small reasonable budget to enjoy and explore Laos.
5. Mekong River – This long, wide and relaxing river, plus sunset (and beer Laos on one hand) ? Perfection!

6. Laos Food- Healthy, flavorful, and cheap! Must tries will be Larb (chicken or pork), Sindard (Laos hotpot with barbecue in one), and Papaya salad. Warning: If you are not a fan of “spicy food” don’t forget to tell them “Bor Phet” meaning “Not Spicy please”.
7. Luang Prabang – The whole Luang Prabang is a UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE. When you roam around this ancient town, you will feel that you are being transported back in time, except that the people around already have smart phones. People watching, adoring old French buildings, temples and saying hello to monks doing their daily routine are some of the recommended things to do here.
8. Kuang Si Waterfalls – Majestic turquoise water. Tip: Try to visit during dry season from Oct to May to enjoy the water.
9. Restaurants – There are plenty of choices for eating out here. Indian, Japanese, Belgian, Italian, French, or American restaurants, they have it! Common story, travelers from different countries will fall in love with Laos, settle here and set up his/her own restaurant.
10. Night Market – This is where you go for cheap bargains, pretty cultural/handicrafts souvenirs for your loved ones back home.
So what are you waiting for? Book that ticket now and explore Laos. You can also leave a comment or send me a message if you have questions about Laos or if you are planning a trip.
I might be able to recommend some places or give you some tips. Word of Caution: You might fall in love with Laos!
